We invite and seek out conversations that might lead to innovative collaborative projects exploiting the strengths and capacities of the DIL. We are particularly interested in projects that:
- develop, extend, or test tools for accomplishing digital humanities projects more easily, cheaply, and/or quickly (such as the WordPress-based DH Press)
- develop, extend, or test tools and processes for using large, humanities-relevant data sources (N.C. newspaper collection, for example).
- engage non-academic audiences and address larger community needs (Digital Loray, for example)
- have significant curricular and pedagogic applicability (See http://college.unc.edu/2014/02/19/lives/
The number, scope, and timing of these projects in any given year depend upon available DIL resources, staff time, and existing commitments. The decision to commit DIL resources to collaborative projects rests with the DIL Director in consultation with the Lab Manager and staff.
To discuss a potential collaboration with the lab, contact Will Bosley, DIL Manager (wbosley@email.unc.edu )
Since 2012, the lab has been a major contributor to and program vehicle for the Carolina Digital Humanities Initiative, a five-year initiative supported by a major grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to stimulate interdisciplinary, collaborative digital humanities practice at UNC Chapel Hill. The lab has provided project management and technical support for the DIL/IAH Faculty Fellows Program. CDHI postdoctoral fellows have contributed to DIL projects and honed their digital skills in the lab as a part of their fellowship experiences. Graduate courses in digital humanities supported by the DIL are core offerings in the Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities. Seth Kotch, the first new faculty hire to be supported by the CDHI, developed Mapping the Long Women’s Movement in collaboration with the lab and is working with us on his Media and the Movement project and on the integration of digital humanities approaches to his teaching in American Studies.
The DIL cooperates and collaborates with other UNC units that support the application of digital humanities methods and materials to faculty research, engaged scholarship, community outreach, graduate training, and undergraduate learning. Among them: several units of the University Library (Research Hub, N.C. Digital Heritage Center, Research and Instructional Services ), Center for Faculty Excellence, OASIS, RENCI, Institute for the Arts and Humanities, and The Office of Research Computing.

Graduate Students
Through its affiliation with the American Studies Department, the DIL offers project-based learning opportunities in digital humanities for graduate students through graduate seminars and independent study/practicum courses. For a list of DIL supported DH courses, including our Graduate Practicum in Digital Humanities, visit our course offerings page. The CDHI website maintains a more complete directory of digital humanities courses offered each term at UNC-CH, Duke, and NCSU. Graduate students are also encouraged to pursue a Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities.
The DIL engages students as graduate lab assistants during the academic year and in the summer to participate in the ongoing work of the DIL and as members of project teams. Interested students (regardless of discipline) should contact the DIL Lab Manager, Will Bosley: wbosley@email.unc.edu .
